Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a method of vein closure with the use of a chemical sclerosant. The procedure is almost painless – anesthesia is usually not needed at all.

Depending on the size of the vessel, several sclerotherapy techniques are used:

  • foam sclerotherapy – in the case of large varicose veins;
  • sclerotherapy with a vein light illuminator – in the case of reticulated veins;
  • sclerotherapy with a magnifying lamp – in the case of spider veins (telangiectasia and venulectasia).

Indications for surgical procedure

Before sclerotherapy, a duplex Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs must be performed to qualify the patient. The indications for the procedure are varicose veins and spider veins. The procedure is virtually painless and does not require anesthesia.

The procedure

Through puncture of the vessel malformations, a solution is inserted into the veins, which irritates the vascular endothelium causing the vessel to collapse and stick together. The most common sclerosant is polidocanol – a detergent that can be used as a liquid or foam. The medication is available in different concentrations, which are used depending on the diameter and the thickness of the wall of the vessel. After injecting the vessel, pressure is applied locally and, in some cases,, a temporary lift of the limb.

Recommendations after treatment

  • directly after the procedure we recommend a 15-20-minute walk
  • earing a class 1 compression stocking for 24 hours after the procedure and then during the day for one week
  • avoiding sun exposure of the limbs (for 1 month)

Already the next day the patients are able to return do moderate physical activity (walks, climbing the stairs, work which does not require intense effort). Return to exercise is possible after 1-2 weeks.

Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT)

EVLT (endovenous laser treatment) is an effective and safe method of ablation. The method involves closing ineffective venous trunks with thermal energy generated by a laser. The optical fiber of the laser device is inserted into the vein through a skin puncture. The procedure is conducted under local anesthesia and the patient can return home immediately after the procedure.

Percutaneous laser therapy

Vasculaze is used for coagulation and closure of mild vascular lesions. Vascular lesions suitable for the Vasculaze procedure include venulectasia, telangiectasia, and hemangiomas, for example on the thighs and calves. During the procedure, a specially designed instrument head sends light impulses causing the blood vessels to disappear.
